Archeology 101

Archeology 101, 2012. 7' x 5'. Acrylic, diamonds on canvas.

I dug into the paint with a linoleum block cutter, cut the surface with a blade, scrapped the skin with a glass cutter, and punctured with a nail. Channeling de Kooning's 'Excavation' and Twombly's style of scratching the surface of the canvas I have turned painting on it's head by digging the content out of the earth of the work instead of building it up. Richter's technique for his metal squeegee abstract painting is also a father of this idea. This way of working has come from my time as a landscaper, my love of dinosaurs as a child, and influence from my father who holds a degree in geology.

Rape of the American Youth

Rape of the American Youth, 2012. 18" x 24". Silk screen, acrylic, and pencil on canvas.

The structure of this page was taken from a school's yearbook from the 1950s. In place of the faculty's pictures I have repeated the face of Jerry Sandusky. He is known for being the former assistant coach at Penn State football and for having been charged with the rape of a minor. This minor is also a male. The backlash from his arrest was huge and received the full gaze of the American media.  Paintings depicting rape have a historical precedent, in which I played upon, as in the Rape of Europa and Rape of the Sabine Women. I have taken influences from Pop art as well, mainly Warhol's work. The brown and yellow color choice is for excrement and urine. The pink color represents the youthful victim. The piece on the whole is a comment on the lack of education Americans are receiving or even seem to want to acquire. Knowledge is becoming less and less of a virtue in a culture dominated by criminal Basketballers, vapid heiresses, and acerbic pundits.

Calvariae Locus I & II

Calvariae Locus I & II, 2012. 12" x 16". Acrylic, oil pastel, charcoal, pencil, sand, bark, nails, and ink on canvas paper.

This view from the hill depicts the view Jesus Christ might have seen. The picture frame is composed from behind the true cross. Although I am an Atheist I cannot denigrate the inexpungible bond of western society and Christianity. As I see it, the symbol of Christ is one Christians are meant to transpose their bodies into. They take his body and blood in communion. There is even an oft used less oft employed prosaism, "What Would Jesus Do?" So in this painting I am putting the viewer up on that hill at Golgotha. I've been looking at too much Anselm Kiefer lately...
