Painting of a Bed I and II
Painting of a Bed I and II, 2012. 12" x 16". Acrylic on canvas.
At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

Her Hair Was Everywhere I & II
Her Hair Was Everywhere I & II, 2012. 12" x 16". Acrylic on canvas.
I met a lady in the meads
Full beautiful, a faery's child;
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.
I set her on my pacing steed,
And nothing else saw all day long;
For sideways would she lean, and sing
A faery's song.
I made a garland for her head,
And bracelets too, and fragrant zone;
She look'd at me as she did love,
And made sweet moan.
She found me roots of relish sweet,
And honey wild, and manna dew;
And sure in language strange she said,
I love thee true.
~Keats
I took a lot from Francis Bacon here.

Jason Beneath Dodona
Jason Beneath Dodona, 2012. 30" x 36". Acrylic, oil stick, oil pastel, pencil, and charcoal on canvas.
So concludes my series on Jason, Medea, and the quest for the Golden Fleece. The aged hairless hero has come to his final twilight, preparing to sleep beside his stalwart ship the Argo as he did every night. Dawn would awake to find Jason crushed beneath the mast. This magical mast cut from the forests of Zeus was named Dodona. A woman, in effect, getting the revenge Medea so long sought against her former husband.
The phallic mast rises in the picture to the top right of the plane. I added a jagged splinter breaking off towards Jason's glabrous scalp. The Argo itself has been shipwrecked for years; broken and rotting upon the sand like a wooden whale. Jason is in fact the same. Even his right arm seems to have jettisoned itself from his body.

My second ever gallery showing as an Adult!!!
This was taken at CORE New Art Space in the Santa Fe Arts District in Denver. The show was entitled, "Mixed Media Juried Show". I wanted to extend my appreciation to Mr. Carlos Frequez, the juror, and CORE for exhibiting my work. After this show I have come to the conclusion that I have the oft misspelled name in history. Derick Bowman, Derrick Boman, Dirk Bauman, Derek Bowman, Dumbass Bonehead. It doesn't help that I have sloppy handwriting.

My first ever gallery showing as an Adult!!!
My first showing of any work as an adult was at ZIP 37's ZIP! POP! Show in Denver. I loathe Pop Art, but when I saw the advert for it on Craigslist I had to give it a shot. Oddly enough I had been reading the loveable curmudgeon Robert Hughes' Shock of the New and going back over the sections on Pop I got my inspiration from works of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer, and Gerhard Richter as well as some current events involving monsters and the education system. I didn't actually have the work made until after it was selected. I'm a poor miser. It proved to be a bit of a hack and slash job getting it made. This was also the first time I'd ever stretched a canvas. A flood of firsts.
A huge thank you to ZIP 37 and judge Dana Cain for picking my piece. Given my aversion to being around anyone, my wife and I spent all of 3 minutes viewing the show. We stepped inside the cramped space, revolved around and disappeared out into the safety of a balmy summer dusk. But it was fun. Check after the break to see the work in its churlish splendor.

Archeology 101
Archeology 101, 2012. 7' x 5'. Acrylic, diamonds on canvas.
I dug into the paint with a linoleum block cutter, cut the surface with a blade, scrapped the skin with a glass cutter, and punctured with a nail. Channeling de Kooning's 'Excavation' and Twombly's style of scratching the surface of the canvas I have turned painting on it's head by digging the content out of the earth of the work instead of building it up. Richter's technique for his metal squeegee abstract painting is also a father of this idea. This way of working has come from my time as a landscaper, my love of dinosaurs as a child, and influence from my father who holds a degree in geology.

Rape of the American Youth
Rape of the American Youth, 2012. 18" x 24". Silk screen, acrylic, and pencil on canvas.
The structure of this page was taken from a school's yearbook from the 1950s. In place of the faculty's pictures I have repeated the face of Jerry Sandusky. He is known for being the former assistant coach at Penn State football and for having been charged with the rape of a minor. This minor is also a male. The backlash from his arrest was huge and received the full gaze of the American media. Paintings depicting rape have a historical precedent, in which I played upon, as in the Rape of Europa and Rape of the Sabine Women. I have taken influences from Pop art as well, mainly Warhol's work. The brown and yellow color choice is for excrement and urine. The pink color represents the youthful victim. The piece on the whole is a comment on the lack of education Americans are receiving or even seem to want to acquire. Knowledge is becoming less and less of a virtue in a culture dominated by criminal Basketballers, vapid heiresses, and acerbic pundits.

Calvariae Locus I & II
Calvariae Locus I & II, 2012. 12" x 16". Acrylic, oil pastel, charcoal, pencil, sand, bark, nails, and ink on canvas paper.
This view from the hill depicts the view Jesus Christ might have seen. The picture frame is composed from behind the true cross. Although I am an Atheist I cannot denigrate the inexpungible bond of western society and Christianity. As I see it, the symbol of Christ is one Christians are meant to transpose their bodies into. They take his body and blood in communion. There is even an oft used less oft employed prosaism, "What Would Jesus Do?" So in this painting I am putting the viewer up on that hill at Golgotha. I've been looking at too much Anselm Kiefer lately...

Period Piece
Period Piece, 2012. 18" x 24". Printed images, oil pastel, charcoal, and pencil on paper.
This work is about Black and White relations in the southern United States. It takes leaders from Black society, many of which had been slaves themselves and together with leaders from the Confederate States of America it forms a shape reminiscent of the periodic table of elements. This says we are all made of the same raw materials. The assembly of men here were picked because they came from the South with the exception of a few. The CSA military leaders have become symbols for Southern pride, known for, whether true or not, their nobility in being virtuous and brave warriors. Both races have been garnished with laurels. This says that the men from both sides are worthy of mention for their brave heroic acts.
Please read the rest; after the jump!

Nike Pro Combat Denver Broncos 2012 Uniform
Nike Pro Combat Denver Broncos 2012-2013 Uniform, 2012. Digital vector art. Illustrator CS2.
John Elway called me and said, "My boy, help the front office here make Peyton Manning feel a little more at home." So I did what the Denver Broncos asked of me and made a uniform that is similar to the Volunteers of Tennessee. It's a uniform that looks a bit more like Denver's throwback design. It goes back to the royal blue as well. I think the current Bronco is a bit too much of a Furry's wet dream. I took the snorting bronc from the old design and removed the "D". I felt the result was something like you'd see painted on a shield of Sparta. Tebow texted me and said he was gonna come back to Denver after seeing my designs. I need to find a better "western" styled font...

Crater
Crater, 2012. 18" x 20" x 16". Cardboard, paper, acrylic, spray paint, oil stick, pencil, t shirt, panty hose, cotton stuffing, gold leaf, thread.
This type of Greek urn, called a 'Krater' was used to mix wine and water. On the vessel I have depicted Jason and Medea along with a shield emblazoned with a triangle. This shape represents the womb from which their two sons were born. The 3 objects - man or Jason, woman or Medea, and dark power or Birthing material form a triumvirate. This trinity of powerful symbols makes up much of the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece tells a quest for legitimacy; hence the journey of Jason to find it and bring back legitimate rule to Iolcos.
Personally, the dark power can symbolize multiple things relating to birthing materials. This can be sperm, the womb, or sea foam like that which bore Botticelli's Venus or Uranus' castrated testicles which bore Aphrodite. The urn itself is symbolic of a female's womb. Water and wine mix to create life in a party. Sperm and egg mix to create human life. The penetrating phallic organ hugging the back of the vessel obviously suggests a male presence. The Golden Fleece draped over the side, spilling out over the edge represents the ejaculation that brings forth life.
